If I was running development for a nonprofit right now, here is what I would be doing:

Redeploy 2020 event and direct mail (for new donor acquisition) budget to digital fundraising.


  1. Companies aren't going to sponsor an event that might or might not happen in Q2.
  2. An unprecedented amount of people are unemployed. Is it a good idea to send an impersonal appeal to them in the mail, especially when they have no idea who you are? No.
  3. Launch a social fundraising campaign, inviting those that can participate to join.


  1. It casts a wide net. Those that care about your cause and are in a position to help will get involved.
  2. Your investment in this channel now will not only help you replace lost revenue today, but it will also help you grow your revenue tomorrow.

Social fundraising is a channel you should already have been invested in, but if you aren't, there is no better time to get started.

What social fundraising is, it's peer-to-peer fundraising, streamlined, amped up. It's letting your supporters take the lead as fundraisers and allowing them to reach their audience through whatever platform necessary. Right. So traditionally it's we've given you this landing page. You can go and create your own personal page and then you're trying to bring people to your page. Social fundraising is different. It's we're using a more omnichannel approach. We're trying to reach our audiences and our friends and our family and our networks across the different platforms they live on every day.
